More than £1.2m million pounds worth of fines were handed out by HMRC in the last half of 2022 for AML breaches!


Some experts believe this is only set to increase, as repeated fines do not appear to be acting as a sufficient deteront to make a difference.  Mark Jones, partner at Payne Hicks Beach was recently quoted by Estate Agent Today saying "These latest fines, taken together with previous fines issued in the same sector, highlight that there is an ongoing pattern of non-compliance within the estate agent and letting agent sectors.  Of course, the vast majority in the sector do comply with the rules but a small number of businesses are still failing to comply."

His concern is that this will prompt HMRC to act strongly, issuing more fines.
